Bettendorf Kiwanis Guidelines for Speakers
When your turn comes up to select a speaker for a club meeting, here are some guidelines to consider:
- Choose a speaker with a topic of informational, educational, motivational or entertainment value that will be of general interest to all club members. Speakers from organizations that serve children should be given priority.
- Use common sense to avoid controversial topics or volatile issues that could be divisive.
- Try to avoid duplication of a speaker or topic which has been covered in the past few years.
- It is preferable to invite elected officials, as opposed to political candidates during an election campaign. Elected official are invited to speak to our club when the format is simply a report to constituents on congressional or legislative affairs. If candidates are invited, all effort must be made to extend the same invitation to all candidates running for that office.
- Speakers from non-profit organization are welcome if their topic concerns the mission of the organization. While requests for funds may be made, they should not comprise the bulk of the presentation.
- Speakers from for-profit organizations are allowed to speak of issues that deal with their industry and the community. Products and services may be mentioned, but promotion of them should not comprise the bulk of the presentation.
